First Brunei Young Leaders Convention to be held in August

BYLC looks to enable youth in developing projects that will help Brunei achieve its national vision

Social enterprises Generasi Bekarih and Al-Huffaz Management have teamed up with Legislative Council Member Yang Berhormat Iswandy Ahmad to organize the inaugural Brunei Young Leaders Convention (BYLC) this August 7 to 9 at the Centrepoint Hotel.

YB Iswandy (pictured main C) said in a press conference last Friday that BYLC is a newly developed platform for local youth to answer the nation and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s call for youth to be actively involved in achieving the national vision, Wawasan 2035 – which envisions an educated, highly skilled people driving a dynamic, sustainable economy ranked within the top 10 countries (per capita) in the world.

“A lot of us (young Bruneians) want to play a part in achieving the national vision but we may not know how,” said YB Iswandy. “We want to bridge that gap by bringing youth together through BYLC so that we are able to make positive plans and develop projects that will help Brunei achieve its vision.”

With a motto of believe, empower, lead, inpsire and act (BELIA), BYLC looks to bring together private and public sector mentors who will be able to help a targeted 200 participants – from young professionals to student council representatives –  formulate plans and projects to be executed after the convention.

YB Iswandy said that within the national vision, which cover 13 strategic areas, there are opportunities for youth to integrate and implement new projects, and by better understanding the national vision, BYLC hopes to enable youth to actively participate in the “whole-of-nation” approach that His Majesty’s government is seeking.

The first day of BYLC will see a keynote address on Brunei’s vision with the second and third days focusing on learning how to develop and finance projects that assist the development of different segments of Brunei’s economy and community.

BYLC is open to youth between 18 to 40-years-old with a registration fee of $150, with scholarships available to those unable to afford participation. YB Iswandy also added that BYLC’s committee is also seeking out private sponsors willing to support the convention.
